Dear CSCI-316 Students, This is the first of two emails I am sending you tonight. As stated in my email of 12/1, Exam 2 will be given on Monday, Dec. 15, the date given on page 4 of the 1st-day-announcements document. Some students might prefer an F to a D or D+ if they do not qualify for a course grade of C or better. This is because of the College's F-grade replacement policy--see the "Grade-Replacement Policy Effective Fall 2014" section of https://qc-undergraduate.catalog.cuny.edu/academic-policies-and-procedures for a statement of the F-grade replacement policy. As a result of this College policy, students who have received an F in a course and then retaken that course will often have higher GPAs than if they had received a D or D+ the first time they took the course. For that reason, you will be asked on the cover page of Exam 2 whether you wish to be considered for a D or D+ if your scores are not high enough to qualify for a course grade of C or better. (Recall from the Grading Policy section on p. 2 of the 1st-day-announcements document that no course grades of C- will be given.) The attached file Old-316-Exam-2-Cover-Page.pdf shows how this question might be worded. Be sure to choose an answer to this question when you see it on the cover page of Exam 2. Regarding the "Yes" choice, note that students who ask to be considered for a D+ or D will still receive F if their scores are too low to qualify for a D. Please do give this matter some thought, as D/D+ and F grades (like other letter grades) are final once they have been submitted to CUNYfirst: That is why I am informing you of the question now. My next email will assign some reading and exercises that you should be sure to do before the final exam. ============================== T. Yung Kong, D.Phil.
