--- Video Title: Critical Path Analysis Description: Critical Path Analysis Watch more Videos at https://www.tutorialspoint.com/videotutorials/index.htm Lecture By: Mr. Arnab Chakraborty, Tutorials Point India Private Limited --- Critical Path Analysis Using this tool, we can find out the duration of the project, that means how many days or months or years the project would take to get completed. This tool is useful in recognizing interdependent tasks in the project. Interdependent means this task can be initiated, this task can be started after completion of which task? So, after completion of this task, which tasks can be started? So, that is the interdependency. It also helps to find out the longest path or critical path to complete the project successfully. Like path diagram, each event is allotted a specific time frame. We know that all these activities, all these events will have a certain time duration within which it is supposed to get completed. This tool shows dependency of event assuming an event can proceed to next only if the previous one has got completed. So, if the preceding task has got completed, then the succeeding task can be initiated. Because that is one predecessor-successor dependency. So, the events are arranged according to their earliest possible start time. So, depending upon the earliest possible start time, we are going for this next task, next task initiation, date and time. So, path between the start and end node is known as a critical path which cannot be further reduced and all events required to be executed in the same order in which they have got mentioned. So, from the start milestone to the finish milestone, I might be having multiple different paths. But the path with the maximum duration will be deciding the critical path. So, I think from this text, the conception is not very clear. So, let us go for this one example for one example for the better understanding. So, now, here we are having one example here. So, just consider this activity network diagram. So, here we are having A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, M, N, K, L, M, N. So, how many activities are you finding here? So, I am finding the 14 activities are there in this particular activity network diagram or the path diagram. So, here you see all the durations are written across the nodes. So, this particular activity network diagram is in the version that is known as activity on node that is A, O, N. So, activity network diagram can be of two types. One is the A, O, N where the durations will be written across the nodes. Otherwise, it will be A, O, A where the durations will be written across the arcs. So, activity on R. So, now here you consider, just tell me how many paths you are getting there. How many paths? I am just showing you one of the paths. So, this is the path you are getting in between start to finish. You can get another path like this. So, how many paths you are getting here? Just calculate yourself. We are going to get 6 paths. So, 2 I have shown. There is a third one. There is a fourth one. There is a fifth one you can guess. And the The sixth one is something like this. So, in this way we are getting 6 paths are there. Now, how to calculate the duration of each path? So, let us do the calculation of this outer path. I am doing this one for you. So, 2 weeks plus 4 weeks, 6 weeks plus 10 weeks, 16 weeks plus 6 weeks, 22 weeks plus 7 weeks, 29 weeks plus 9 weeks, 38 weeks plus 2 weeks. So, there is a 40 weeks. If I consider this duration are written in weeks then. So, in this way this outer path is having the duration of 40 weeks. So, how did I get this path duration? By summing up all the activities falling on the path, the respective duration. So, here I have shown the outer path. So, that is start A, B, C, D, G, H, M finish. So, A, B, C, D, G, H, M finish. So, here I have written the respective durations. Start and finish are the So, they will be having the duration 0. So, what is the duration you are getting? You are getting the duration of 40 weeks as I calculated in front of you. So, I have considered all the 6 paths and then I calculated all the respective durations in weeks. So, what is the maximum duration you are getting? So, maximum duration you are getting 44 weeks. So, the red color marked path is the critical path as with the maximum duration. So, it is of 44 weeks and And that will decide this. This particular activity network diagram indicates the project execution. So, that means the project will be having the duration of 40 weeks. So, which path has been identified? Just check here. A, B, C, E, F, J, L, N. So, A, B, C, E, F, J, L, N. So, this is a path which is having the maximum duration of 44 weeks. So, in this way using the critical path analysis, we can calculate the respective project durations going through the calculating the summing of the activity durations falling on the critical path. So, you can pause this video right now here. You are finding all these details. Okay. So, now go on doing this one at your end and check whether these values have got written correctly or not. And in this way, you can apply this concept in other activity network diagram. Thanks for watching this video.
